Alaska's licensing system for electrical work confuses a lot of homeowners — the person and the company are licensed separately. Here's the plain-English version.

The Electrical Administrator: the qualifying person

An Electrical Administrator is an individual who has proven experience and passed the state exam for electrical work. Alaska requires every electrical contracting business to employ a licensed Electrical Administrator who takes responsibility for the company's electrical work and its code compliance. Think of them as the person whose license the work rides on.

The contractor registration: the business

The company itself registers with the state as a Construction Contractor (with a mechanical or specialty classification where relevant). That registration requires a surety bond and liability insurance on file with the state. A business without it shouldn't be contracting work at all.

The electricians on your job

The people physically pulling wire hold a state certificate of fitness as journeyman electricians or work as registered trainees under supervision. Together the three layers — certified electricians, a licensed administrator, and a bonded, registered business — are what "licensed and insured" actually means in Alaska.
